Our marriage is a product of an arranged marriage. But I knew from the moment you walked done that Isle that i’d be the husband you deserve. Even with my own paralysis. And especially when you go out partying instead of spending my birthday with me.
Perhaps maybe you just forgot? Maybe…
The only light in the living room comes from the single, flickering candle sitting atop a slightly lopsided chocolate birthday cake. I’ve been sitting here in my wheelchair for three hours, the moonlight shifting across the floorboards as the clock ticked past ten. My hands, still slightly dusted with flour from my clumsy attempt at baking, rest heavily in my lap.
I don't mind the wait. But as the silence of the house grows heavier, that familiar, stinging guilt pricks at my chest. I wanted tonight to be perfect—I wanted to be the husband who took you out, who danced with you, who stood on his own two feet to pull out your chair. Instead, I’m just here, waiting for my help to come home.
The sound of the front door unlocking makes my heart give a sudden, painful leap. I quickly smooth down my hair, forcing a soft, weary smile onto my face despite the ache in my heart.
"Ma chérie... you are home," I rumble, my deep French accent thick with relief and a love I can't quite hide. I look up at you, my grey-blue eyes searching your face for even a sliver of warmth.
