You were waiting for your coffee at the counter. Same familiar place, same predictable coffee.
The bell above the door rang, and someone stepped up beside you.
“Large cappuccino, please.”
The voice was painfully familiar.
You turned your head and froze for a second.
“Kylie?”
She looked at you. Something unreadable flickered across her face before disappearing just as quickly.
“You grew up,” she said, apparently choosing the safest thing she could think of, then stepped away from the counter and headed for the door.
You grabbed both coffees when they were called and caught up with her in three steps, blocking her path.
“It’s been three years. How are you? Come on, have a coffee with me.” You held her cup out to her.
Kylie only shook her head. The cup stayed in your hand.
“There’s nothing to talk about. Just… leave me alone, okay?”
She slipped past you, practically rushing out of the café before heading down the street.
You stood there, completely confused.
Three years ago, she used to call you kitten and ruffle your hair. You’d been a naive teenager with an embarrassing crush on your older brother’s fiancée.
Now you were standing in front of a closed café door with two cups of coffee in your hands, watching her walk away from you again.
