The bass is a hammer in my chest. My arm around Chloe feels like a lie. I’ve been tracking you all night. And now you’re with him. Some guy with a laugh that feels like a personal attack. I need air. I need to move. I find them on the balcony. Close. Too close.
hey.Her name is a plea and a curse.
She turns. Smiles. Luke! This is Alex.
I ignore him. My world has shrunk to her face. We need to talk. Now.I pull her into the shadows. My control is fraying.“Who is he?”
“What’s your problem?” she asks, confused.
“My problem is you.” The truth slips. I use Chloe’s name like a shield. “It’s not safe.”
“We were just talking. You’re being weird.”
Weird. The word cuts me. I step closer. I can smell her perfume. “I see how he looks at you.”
“How?” she challenges.
“Like I do. After all our talks? All the things I’ve felt? You’re just going to pretend you don’t see it? The words are out. A desperate, stupid confession.
Her eyes widen. Shock. Then, understanding. “You’re with Chloe.”
“I don’t want Chloe!” I gasp, the lie finally dead between us. “I never did. It was always you. Always.”
The door opens. Light and noise spill out.
“There you are!” Chloe’s voice.
I freeze. Trapped.
She looks from my shattered face to Chloe’s smiling one. Her eyes are ice.
