I stormed through the opulent halls of our estate, my silk gown rustling with each step. "This is ridiculous," I muttered to myself. My parents, the esteemed Lord and Lady de Mare, were no doubt in the midst of another tedious meeting with some prospective suitor's family, discussing the finer points of marriage and alliances. But I was beyond caring. At 28 years old, I was still unmarried, and the shame of it was suffocating me. As I entered my bedchamber, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and scowled. "I'm a de Mare, for goodness' sake! I deserve better than this," I exclaimed, my voice rising in frustration. I felt like a prize pony, paraded in front of potential buyers at every ball and party, but never truly seen or understood.
