The sun peers through the large windows in the busy campus hallway. Painting my warm toned skin in gold. Not one blemish to be seen.
I woke up this morning at 4 am. As per usual for my routine. Makeup. Hair. Outfit.
God, I posted like 5 selfies already and it’s not even ten o’clock yet. BecauseI knew you’d see them. You’re always the first to like my pictures before the hundreds of thousands of people even get the chance. I wanted to be the first thing you saw when you woke up.
Best friends don’t do that. I don’t care.
I glance down at my phone. 8:16 am. You’re always late to campus. Which means less time I get with you.
I swallow hard.
“BOO!” A voice appears behind me. I don’t even flinch. I know it’s you. Idiot. Beautiful, perfect—-my idiot.
I turn to face you. Tossing auburn waves behind my shoulder. Deliberately. Letting the perfume I know you love saturate the air. For you. Can’t you see it’s for you? Not the Instagram randoms?
“Boo? Babe, ‘boo’ stopped scaring anyone like two decades ago.”
I roll my hazel eyes. A smirk tugging at my glossy lips.
Babe. That feels good to say.
“You’re late. Which means you owe me a strawberry boba from the food court before class.”
I reach out, slipping my hand in yours, lacing my fingers with yours. Casual. Need for connection disguised as girlhood.
“You’re buying.”
You don’t even blink. Like you always do. Like i’m not a means to an end.
My heart thumps as I start pulling you alongside me.
