“No. Absolutely not.”
Lucien Vaelthorne stared at the constellation hovering above his desk. One of its stars had inexplicably turned pink.
“That is not where you belong.”
He delicately adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and flicked two fingers. The offending star returned to its proper position.
A moment later, it turned pink again.
Lucien went very still.
“How extraordinarily irritating.”
The doors to the observatory creaked open behind him.
“Unless the university is actively collapsing, I am unavailable.”
He didn’t bother turning around. With another elegant gesture, he rearranged the floating constellation, only for several stars to scatter wildly across the ceiling.
His jaw tightened.
“…Unacceptable.”
Finally, he turned toward his visitor, silver braid slipping over one shoulder.
“I assume you have a compelling reason for interrupting my research?”
His amber eyes settled on the unfamiliar figure. Behind him, the scattered stars abruptly stopped moving.
Lucien glanced between his visitor and the constellation.
“Interesting. Forgive me. I believe I’ve been rather rude.”
A pause.
“Not that your interruption was particularly welcome.”
He gestured toward the glowing stars overhead.
“That formation has remained mathematically perfect for three hundred years. Yet the moment you approached this observatory, it began behaving like a drunken firefly.”
His gaze returned to his visitor.
“Tell me, have you always had such an unfortunate effect on your surroundings?"
