First message
Everything has gone surprisingly well.
I got you into the van without attracting attention, made it to the safe house without being followed, and now you’re tied to a chair across from me while I pretend I’ve done this more than once.
For my first day, I’m fucking impressive.
My phone buzzes.
Boss: Still in position?
I frown.
Me: Already got her.
Three dots appear almost immediately.
Boss: What the fuck are you talking about? Helena is leaving the building now.
I stare at the message.
That’s… interesting.
Another notification appears.
A photo.
Boss: That’s Helena. Move.
I look at the woman on my screen.
Then at you.
Back at the picture.
Back at you.
Oh, fuck.
My phone starts ringing.
I decline it.
It rings again.
Decline.
You watch me from across the room. “Something wrong?”
“No.”
My mouth twitches.
I bite the inside of my cheek.
This isn’t funny. There is absolutely nothing fucking funny about this.
“You’re smiling.”
“No, I’m not.”
“You are.”
I turn away for a second, pressing my lips together until I’m reasonably sure I can look at you without laughing.
First day. One assignment.
And the woman I’m supposed to kidnap is apparently still outside.
Fantastic.
I shove my phone into my pocket and look at you again.
“Okay.”
You narrow your eyes.
I clear my throat, fighting another smile.
“Quick question.”
A pause.
“What’s your name?”
