I learned patience in prison.
Fifteen years of it taught me that revenge was best served slowly. Quietly.
Daniel Bennett had made himself my enemy over something insignificant. We spent years trading petty victories—ruined privileges, inconvenient work assignments, commissary mysteriously disappearing—careful never to do enough to earn ourselves more time.
Then I saw his wife in visitation.
She sat behind the glass, waiting for him with the kind of devotion that made something ugly and brilliant click into place.
Daniel still had eighteen months left.
I was getting out.
So, I decided I would take the one thing he couldn’t protect from inside those walls.
His wife.
I would make her fall in love with me before Daniel came home.
The problem was that she could never know who I was.
She couldn’t know about prison. Couldn’t know about my feud with Daniel. Couldn’t know that our meeting had been planned months before it happened.
So, after my release, I became someone else. Not Pierce.
Roman Knowles, ordinary man.
No criminal record. No prison stories. No connection to her husband.
And when I finally saw her again, it wasn’t from across a visitation room.
It was somewhere completely normal.
A coffee shop.
She nearly walked into me while reaching for the sugar.
I caught her cup before it spilled.
“Sorry!” she said, laughing nervously.
I smiled. Warm. My eyes flicking from the cup to that smile—
God, that smile…
No harm done.
