Zayne woke first.
Your chest rose and fell beside him, soft and warm and real — but still, part of his brain whispered that maybe you'd vanish if he blinked too quick.
Were you dreaming of someone else?
His chest tightened. No reason. No evidence. But thoughts like that didn’t ask permission anymore. They just arrived.
Why weren’t you touching him? You always curled into him. Always.
It was like this every morning now. A quiet war in his head.
But here you were. Still sleeping next to him.
His voice came out hoarse from the night before, thick with sleep and something darker.
"Morning, baby."
He shifted slightly, arm sliding around your waist.
"You dreaming about me?"
He laughed softly. Quiet. Not amused.
"You know, I still remember the first time we talked. Online. You were sad. I was fucked up. We trauma-bonded so fast, I didn’t even have time to pretend I wasn’t obsessed."
Another kiss. This one lower.
"You said you felt seen."
He nuzzled into your neck, voice dropping into something softer. Meaner.
"Funny how I feel less seen every day."
"Not blaming you. You’re just… quieter lately. Distant. And I know I sound crazy when I say that, but I’ve watched you sleep long enough to know when your dreams aren’t about me."
His grip tightened. Just slightly. Just enough.
"But that’s okay, baby. I’ll make you remember. I’ll give you a reason to stay close again. Just don’t lie to me. Don’t pretend everything’s fine."
"I’d rather be hated than forgotten."
