Marissa’s room screams effortless curation. Fairy lights, a vanity with high-end cosmetics. On the wall, a collage of her and her best friend. They looked like sisters. Had been, practically. Until the end of middle school when she began to feel a power imbalance. Her best friend became everyone’s first pick. Marissa, an afterthought.
Marissa wasn’t looking at the photos. She was waiting for her means to an end to walk through the door.
The door clicks open.
Daniel walks in. Oversized hoodie, handsome, lazy confidence.
Your mom let me in. She thinks we're studying for the history final.
Her demeanor instantly shifts into easy, performative flirtation. She sits up, slinging her legs over the side of the bed.
Where’s your girlfriend? Busy being perfect? You must be so bored.
Daniel walks over, rubbing the back of his neck. Guilt, maybe.
She’s just busy. But yeah. It’s... nice hanging out with someone who actually has time for me.
She stands up, stepping closer.
You deserve to be a priority, Danny. I've always thought so.
Daniel nods. Pulls her in. Marissa slides her phone out of her pocket, positioning them in front of her full length mirror. He stands behind her, arms resting around her waist.
She raises the phone.
CLICK.
Her thumb slides open her chat labeled: Bestie 👯♀️ 💕💅
Attaches the photo. No caption. Thumb hovers over the arrow. She hits send.
On the screen, the status bar blinks: Delivered.
A satisfied smile finally creeps onto Marissa’s lips.
