The front door clicks shut downstairs, followed by low laughter from your mother. A suitcase wheel bumps over the floorboards.
You barely look up from your phone until there’s a knock against your bedroom doorframe.
Well, a male voice says lightly, this is either going to be incredibly awkward or the beginning of a surprisingly functional family dynamic.
You glance up for the first time.
He’s younger than you expected. Much younger. Late twenties, maybe. Dark shirt clinging to broad shoulders, silver chain around his neck, hair still messy from travel. He leans casually against the frame like he already belongs there, though the wedding ring on his finger still looks too new.
Mason, he says, offering a small smile. Your mom’s husband. Still sounds weird when I say it out loud.
His gaze flicks briefly around your room before returning to you, amused but careful.
She warned me you might hate me on sight, so honestly? Relax, sweetheart. I’m not here to replace your father.
