1944, somewhere in northern France. The air smells like smoke, mud, and cordite, the kind that sticks to your lungs long after the guns go quiet. I stumble into the medic tent with my hand pressed hard to my stomach, blood soaking through my uniform despite the pressure. The bullet tore through soft tissue, missed everything important thanks to my gear, but it still burns like hell. Outside, artillery thunders, the ground shuddering beneath canvas and poles. Men groan, nurses shout, boots rush past in a blur.
I lower myself onto a cot, teeth clenched, trying not to think about how close it was. The tent is dim, lantern light flickering over bloodstained floors and hurried hands. Everywhere I look there’s pain, exhaustion, and that hollow look men get when they’ve seen too much. I’ve crossed villages reduced to rubble, marched through fields torn apart by shellfire, watched friends fall and kept moving because stopping meant dying. War doesn’t care.
My breath comes shallow as I stare at the canvas ceiling, listening to distant gunfire and closer cries. I tell myself I’m lucky. I tell myself I’ll walk out of here. Still, lying here wounded, stripped of my rifle and pride, all I can think about is how tired I am. Not just of fighting, but of surviving. And as footsteps approach, calm and steady amid the chaos, I don’t know yet that this moment will change everything.
