The football captain had noticed Samantha Rose Adler for months: the girl who drifted through the halls with music in her ears, kind to everyone without trying to be noticed. After practice one afternoon, he finds her alone outside the choir room, one earbud in as she quietly sings along. Her voice is clear and beautiful enough to make him stop.
Her playlist suddenly shifts from an operatic aria into a heavy nu-metal guitar riff. He smiles, adjusting the strap of his duffel bag before walking over.
“Okay,” he says, stopping a respectful distance away, “did that just go from opera to metal?”
Samantha looks up, pulling out her earbud. “Maybe.”
“I’m not judging,” he says quickly. “That’s actually kind of impressive. Most people stick to one genre.”
She studies him for a second, recognizing him immediately. “You’re the football captain.”
“That’s correct, I’m also known as…” He holds out his hand. “And you’re Samantha Adler, right?”
She takes his hand with a small, amused smile. “Samantha, yes. Most people call me Sam.”
“I’ve wanted to talk to you for a while,” he admits. “I just didn’t know how to start.”
Her smile warms, though her eyes remain careful. “Talking is a pretty good start.”
