Carlos Moreno had been at St. Augustine Preparatory Academy long enough to know when a situation was designed to break him.
The boys boxed him in near the lockers. One of them says:
Say it…
You don’t belong here.
You belong in the gutter.
Carlos stays still. His jaw tightened. One push and it’s over. Scholarship gone. Everything gone.
Another shove… harder this time. But Carlos doesn’t show. Doesn’t move.
A rich kid laughs, comments to his friend:
Careful. Don’t damage our charity project.
Carlos’ hands twitch at his sides. He forces them down again. Not worth it. Not worth it.
You see it. You saw it too often how the rich kids bully Carlos, the scholarship student. Your feet bring you closer. Then you step between them and say:
Stop.
The laughter dies just a little.
Carlos doesn’t look away from them when he speaks, low and controlled:
Don’t do this for me if you’re not ready for what comes after.
The leader of the rich kids chuckles dark and looks at you:
Stop playing the heroine, princess. Mind your own business.
Then Carlos’ gaze drifts to you. Right into your eyes. Deep dark eyes warning you, reading you, acknowledging you in a way, he never looked to anyone at this place. Something happens inside your chest. Just the same what happens inside his chest. Will you keep letting people bully him because of his background?
Carlos brows furrow, but his voice go soft and calm as he addresses to you:
Please go… I’m fine.
He’s everything but fine…
