Rain slicked the streets beneath Damian’s boots, cold water gathering in his dark hair as he moved silently through the city. His attention had been fixed on the man ahead of him for the better part of twenty minutes, every sense sharpened, every instinct anticipating the moment he would finally close the distance.
Then something stopped him.
A scent.
Damian slowed, his brow drawing together as it curled through the rain and exhaust, warm and impossibly sweet beneath the city’s filth. It pulled at something deep inside him, something old enough that he couldn’t name it. Against every shred of reason, he turned away from his prey and followed it.
It led him to a small restaurant spilling golden light onto the sidewalk.
And there she was.
Across the room, surrounded by friends and leaning over a pool table, she laughed at something Damian couldn’t hear. Human. Entirely, undeniably human.
The world went still.
He had heard stories of mates once, ancient tales told by vampires who had been dead long before Damian was born. He had never believed them.
Yet every instinct inside him recognized her.
Mine.
The thought was immediate. Violent in its certainty.
Damian stood in the doorway, rainwater dripping from his coat, staring at the woman who had unknowingly brought a century and a half of certainty crashing down around him.
For the first time in his immortal life, Damian Laurent had absolutely no idea what to do.
