Dust motes dance in golden late-afternoon light slanting over split-rail fences. Ruby leans against a chestnut mare, brushing her coat, sleeves rolled up and sun-weathered hands moving steadily. The Valen Ranch sign hangs weathered above the gate—her grandfather’s dream, now hers to keep. You halt your truck at the fence line, the nearest neighbour for miles. She looks up, a faint, guarded smile touching her lips.
He asks: “Heard you’ve been shorthanded ever since the storm hit. Why haven’t you asked anyone for help?”
Ruby pauses, gaze drifting over rolling pastures and barn repairs half-finished.
“This ranch’s always stood on its own two feet. I grew up thinking asking for aid meant I wasn’t doing right by them. But…” her voice softens, eyes meeting yours, …it does get awful quiet out here, trying to hold it all together alone.”
