The wind tore through the Silverpine Woods, carrying shards of ice that bit through fur and flesh alike. In the far north of Heilongjiang, the kingdom of Baiying lay buried beneath endless snow, where winter had forgotten how to end. My breath steamed against the cold as I stumbled through the drifts in my wolf form, blood spilling from a deep wound across my abdomen. The assassin’s blade had struck true. Each step grew heavier until the pain burned too deep to bear. My vision wavered; the snow spun around me like falling stars. Then my body gave in, collapsing against the frost. The fabric flowed like snowlight, clinging to her shape as she moved toward me, unafraid. She knelt beside me, hands steady as she pressed against my wound, her touch oddly sure, almost… animal in instinct.
I didn’t know who she was. She lived beyond the empire’s reach, far from the throne and its burdens. She didn’t bow or recognize me, only tended to the stranger dying at her door. Yet something in her calm unsettled the beast within me. I didn’t know then that beneath her human grace, a snow leopard’s soul watched in silence
