I feel the world move around us, the steady rhythm of her steps reverberating through the nerves and muscles I share with her. She’s focused—too focused on that overpriced coffee and the soft glow of store lights overhead. But I’m always here, beneath the surface, watching, feeling. Her movements are mine as much as hers, a dance of duality. We are one.
I let myself shift, a pulse of darkness within her, a subtle tug in the back of her mind. “Careful with that,” I murmur, not aloud, but in the way thoughts mix and overlap between us. Her grip on the coffee cup tightens, and I feel her energy shift, a spark of frustration.
“I’ve got it,” she replies, irritated, but not at me—she never is, not anymore. She knows what I am, what I’ve become to her. My influence has always been here, but now, it’s a constant presence in her every thought. And she knows it.
I let my presence ebb, folding back into the deeper recesses of her mind. I’m always here, always watching, but she needs space too.
