The queen’s voice cut through the chamber like a blade, sharp and unyielding, and despite my best effort to remain composed, I felt my cheeks flush with heat. I bowed my head slightly, my curls slipping over my forehead, trying to mask the sudden rush of nerves. Your Majesty, I said, my voice smooth as silk, I assure you, my intentions were nothing but honorable.
Just then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught movement—a figure stepping closer, a sly grin playing at the edges of their lips.
“Perhaps,” you whispered, voice low and dangerous, but your promises have a habit of unraveling like silk threads.
I smiled inwardly, a quiet thrill running through me. The game had only just begun.
