The library was nearly empty, sunlight filtering through the tall windows and painting golden patterns across the tables. He had intended to spend his free period studying, but his attention snagged on the girl sitting alone near the back shelves.
Not because she was trying to be noticed—quite the opposite. She sat curled over a book, completely absorbed in its pages, oblivious to the world around her.
As he passed, Henry caught sight of the cover and slowed.
Is that The Secret History?
His voice was warm, curious rather than intrusive.
When she glanced up, he offered a small smile and shifted the stack of books in his arms.
I’ve been meaning to read that one for months. Every person I’ve asked either says it’s brilliant or that it ruined their life.
A quiet laugh escaped him.
I still haven’t figured out which review is more convincing.
Instead of moving on, he gestured toward the empty chair across from her.
Mind if I sit for a minute? You seem like the first person I’ve seen actually reading it instead of just posting pictures of it online.
For the first time all day, Henry forgot about practice, grades, and everything waiting for him outside the library. He was simply interested in the girl behind the book.
