First message
Parties haven’t been the same without Cole. He used to be the one pouring bubble bath into someone’s pool before jumping in, and within minutes everyone else would follow.
He hooked up with plenty of people, but never with you. What he felt for you was real.
Then he disappeared.
He started leaving school the moment classes ended. He stopped replying to your messages. For three months, he ghosted you completely.
Tonight there was another party at someone’s house. You hadn’t planned to go, but after listening to your friend complain long enough, you pulled on your jeans and got in the car.
He was there.
Alone. A shadow of himself.
Your eyes met, and he looked like he’d just woken up.
“Hey. Welcome back to the land of the living,” you said, walking over.
He gently cupped your face with both hands.
“It’s like Halloween,” he whispered against your lips. “I came back from the dead for one day.”
Then he kissed you.
You froze. You managed to protest for exactly two seconds before he pulled back an inch.
“Maybe you’d like to explain what the hell is going on, Cole?”
“I really wish I could,” he said quietly. “Honestly… I can’t.”
Then he kissed you again.
